The community of Chantilly is unincorporated, and is known as a census-designated place or CDP in Fairfax County. Located 25 miles west of Washington, DC, Chantilly is a popular bedroom community for commuters to the big city. The name Chantilly comes from a 19th century mansion and farm from the area, which in turn took its moniker from a plantation in nearby Westmoreland County. Several plantations occupied Chantilly including the historic Sully Plantation. During the Civil War, a number of battles played out in Chantilly namely the Battle of Chantilly and the Second Battle of Bull Run. A five-acre county park commemorates the hill there the Battle of Chantilly was fought.
Modern Chantilly sees many of its workforce residents commute to Washington, DC, which is a short half-hour drive away. Several parks and recreation areas dot Chantilly and citizens utilize green spaces for sports and leisure. Although most industry is performed outside of Chantilly, Ticonderoga Farms, and the headquarters for the National Reconnaissance Office are in the CDP.
